Identifying threats to national security is a complex problem. Defense and Intelligence Analysts must sift through endless amounts of tabular, textual, image, spatial, temporal, and streaming data to extract operationally relevant information for decision makers. Usually, the very rare patterns and extreme events being sought are outliers from the vast amount of ordinary data; however, not all outliers are of interest, and not all cases of interest are outliers — or even similar. Thus, it is a very challenging problem, even with machine learning, where past examples can “teach” a model what to look for. Still, during many years of intense work in this area, our team has won accolades for work setting the gold standard for implementing threat detection systems.
We provide data science consulting services and tools to prototype, apply, integrate, and operationalize innovative data and text mining technologies to identify threats. We consult with multiple Department of Defense agencies in the areas of counterintelligence, counterterrorism, counterespionage, security, weapons of mass destruction, and biometrics.
We help our clients develop analytical threat detection frameworks that implement data science as a foundational part of their analytics strategy. These frameworks act as force multipliers to quickly focus resources on the most interesting cases. Some examples of our threat detection work include:
- Counterintelligence and Security
- Counterterrorism and Biometrics
